In comparing the two versions of Sabrina Spellman's story, there are both similarities and differences between the two.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch was an American sitcom originally debuting in 1997 with actress Melissa Joan Hart playing Sabrina. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was a Netflix original debuting in 2018, starring Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina.
In both adaptations, Sabrina's core story is the same: she is a teenage witch who is half mortal on her mother's side and half witch on her father's side. In both adaptations Sabrina is orphaned and lives with her two aunts Hilda and Zelda, as well as her pet cat Salem.
Both Sabrinas are based off the comic book, but it's worth noting that they're actually two different source comic books. Sabrina then was first featured in 'Archie's Madhouse' in 1962, whilst Sabrina now was based off the 2014 Archie Horror comic book. In both comic books Sabrina lives in fictional Greendale (which is actually next to Riverdale), but original TV show Sabrina was actually based outside of Boston in a fictional town.
While both Sabrinas balance the magical and mortal world in both friends and school (especially whilst helping out their mortal friends), the newer version of the story has darker elements, and much more consequence to Sabrina's magical mayhem. Perhaps the darker themes were deemed more suitable for the now older audience of the original show.
Covn founder Rebecca grew up watching Sabrina, but the newer version of the show is her favourite. "For me it's the production and the attention to detail in the Sabrina now. There's so much good magical lore and historical magical references they just get right".
